There are rarely signs of osteoporosis until a lot of bone has been lost. A medical test that measures the amount of bone is the only method of detection. The technique used to measure bone status at Women's Health Care is ultrasound, passed through the heel. The heel is measured because its bone is similar to that found in the spine and hip, where most osteoporotic fractures occur. |

| Does
insurance pay for testing? Some plans do, including Medicare, but they may have certain requirements. Call your insurance company for authorization. What can I expect during the test? The bone density test requires a bare foot, with no areas of broken skin. Remove your sock, stockings or pantyhose. During the test , warm water fills membranes that contact your heel to provide a path for the ultrasound energy to follow. A small amount of water soluble ultrasound gel will be placed on your heel. The test itself takes about 1 minute. During the test, keep your heel as still as possible for best results. What will a bone density test tell my doctor? This test is used as an aid to doctors in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. The test compares your bone quality to that of a young adult at peak bone strength. It also compares your results to people of your same age, called "age-matched." This information along with other factors such as weight, medical history and ethnic background, helps your doctor gauge your risk of osteoporotic fractures. Treatment, if required, is determined at this point. Potential preventative measures can also be discussed and considered. Is the test safe? The Achilles Express test is safe. The amount of ultrasound energy used is many times lower than that of traditional ultrasound imaging which is considered completely safe. |
