Biofeedback and Bladder Retraining
Just as an infant must learn to control his bladder, women who have developed poor voiding "habits" can be retrained. Retraining takes place by shaping behavior over a period of six to eight weeks. Bladder emptying intervals are increased using urge suppression technique and pelvic floor contractions. Bladder retraining is facilitated by an in-office, state-of-the-art, computerized biofeedback program. |

Biofeedback for teaching pelvic muscle exercises to reduce incontinence is recognized as first-line treatment. Biofeedback is a method of providing information about body functions so changes can be made. |
Computerized biofeedback devices detect electrical activity of the pelvic floor muscles and display this on a monitor screen. The individual makes adjustments to contract the desired pelvic floor muscles while relaxing surrounding muscles. Bladder retraining and biofeedback can be used for both stress and urge incontinence. Strengthening the pelvic muscles effectively reduces the number of accidents and amount of leakage with cough or strain. Pelvic floor contraction also reflexively relaxes the bladder to prevent accidents from uncontrolled bladder contractions. |
Pelvic Floor Stimulation Electrical stimulation or E-stim is controlled delivery of small amounts of electricity to the muscles and nerves of the pelvic floor. E-stim strengthens pelvic floor muscles more rapidly than biofeedback alone and is used in conjunction with biofeedback and bladder retraining. |
